Following a cool weekend, history's hottest summer cleared its throat. Dusk whispered all day of its intentions, and as it fell, horizontal bolts ripped across the warm purple sky for miles. From a stoplight at the top of a hill, I watched lightning stretch so far, and in such a blaze of electric rhythm, that the humanity underneath, limited by physiology, felt like an atmospheric accident... a snorting solar laugh.
